The 12-point checklist before you buy any used car
Buying a used car in Singapore without a systematic inspection is a gamble. Paint and polish conceal a multitude of sins. Here are the most critical points to check before signing anything.
1. Check panel gaps and paint
Walk around the car in good light. Inconsistent panel gaps often indicate prior accident damage. Run your hand along the panel joins — fresh paint on one door while the rest of the car shows age tells a story.
2. Use a paint depth gauge
Factory paint typically reads 80–150 microns. A reading above 200 microns on any panel usually means filler or repainting over accident damage. Gauges are available from S$30 at Sim Lim.
3. Verify the VIN
The Vehicle Identification Number on the dashboard must match the LTA vehicle registration card. Any mismatch is a serious red flag — do not proceed.
4. Get an independent inspection
S$80–150 at an independent workshop is cheap insurance on a S$80,000 purchase. A good mechanic will check for oil leaks, worn bushings, suspension play, and brake condition from underneath — this is the single most important step.
